Especially in these times of economic hardship, it's good to have people around who blossom with hope for the future. People like the staff of Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, who have been calculating my tax code for the next financial year.
Better news than expected for Philosophy Ph.D. finalists, then: my estimated income for the year is over £112,950. I'll be delighted if it turns out to be true...
Incorrect tax codes may have been sent by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) because of an error in a new computer system... In a few cases the Revenue computer system has removed the personal allowance on the assumption that the person's income will be higher than £100,000.
